Weddings in France

France is popular not just for its gastronomy and lifestyle, but also for weddings abroad. Imagine getting married in France in a romantic château set amongst the vineyards with your friends and family sharing your wedding day? Or perhaps a ceremony with a spectacular mountain backdrop for those all important wedding photos? Or you could copy many celebrities and get married at a private villa or on a yacht?

If none of those appeal, then how about getting married in Paris? One of the most romantic cities in the world – what better place to become Mr and Mrs? You could exchange vows in one of the pretty château on the outskirts and then spend your honeymoon wandering around the sights. Or perhaps you'd like a sophisticated city wedding in a stylish hotel or palace before soaking up the atmosphere?

You can find many gorgeous chalets perched on mountainsides in the Alps which arrange weddings, or towards the north you could even get married in the Champagne region – why not splurge on your wedding day!

As you can see, there are so many different regions available for getting married in France that it can be quite difficult to narrow down the right place for you, however, below we have some suggestions which might inspire you.

1. Chateau

A Chateau wedding is a classic option for a French wedding. There are so many absolutely gorgeous chateaux dotted across all regions of France so you're bound to find one in the right area for you. They range from small, more 'boutique' chateaux, to large properties which can host a big wedding easily.

Perhaps you're dreaming of a long sweeping drive, conical turrets, four-poster beds, or simply the seclusion of hiring an entire chateau for the weekend to share and celebrate with your friends and family? All this is possible in a French Chateau which is why we think that not much can beat a chateau wedding!

2. Chalet Wedding

Whether it's summer or winter, a chalet provides a spectacular setting for a wedding in France. Many chalets in the French Alps have started offering weddings in the summer months as well as in winter. With their spectacular setting in the mountains getting married here is a really wonderful option, which you may not have thought of?

Spring in the mountains is stuninng with meadows full of flowers and melting snow on the tops of the peaks. The long days enable you to continue to celebrate outside as the sun goes behind the mountains, and you can often hire the whole chalet (or more than one) so you and your wedding party can celebrate to your hearts' content.

Equally, winter can be magical here with pristine snow on the mountains and log fires keeping the chalet cosy. Whichever season you choose, a chalet wedding can be magical.

4. South of France

The South of France includes the glitzy Cote d'Azur and the more rural Provence, as well as the long Mediterranean coastline. This area of France is full of the rich and famous with their mega-mansions and yachts, although if you go inland a bit you'll come across quiet, rural France with lots of rustic villages which aren't busy even in the height of summer.

This is a large region so can accommodate any kind of wedding - from a high-end celebration in Nice or St Tropez in a 5 star hotel, villa or yacht, to a small country wedding in a picturesque village in the hills above Nice or further into Provence.

Many visitors only see the coastal towns and miss out on the sleepy villages in the hills above which also offer a truly special wedding location.

5. Bordeaux

Bordeaux in the South West of France is best known for its wine growing region, with plenty of wedding locations here in local vineyards. The rolling hills lined with rows of vines make a fabulous backdrop to any wedding ceremony, and there are plenty of chateux here too which offer ceremonies, many of which have their own private vineyard attached.

If a countryside wedding isn't what you're looking for then the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bordeaux city is another incredible location to get married. The city's ornate buildings are the epitome of elegance with their honey coloured stone - what better backdrop for an elegant wedding? The city is full of chic hotels, delicious food in the many artisan restaurants and there are some great shopping streets too!

All in all, Bordeaux and the region around it is a lovely choice for a wedding abroad.
