wedding couple in ice chapel

Interview: Ruth from Sun and Snow Weddings

Lapland makes a stunning winter wedding destination, full of magical snowy scenes, ice chapels and just overall wonderfulness. We asked wedding planner Ruth why she chose to be a wedding planner here.

How did you decide to become a wedding planner? / What inspired you to start your business?
I used to work for a major tour operator as a wedding co-ordinator and felt that the brides deserved a much more personal service than a tour operator could offer. I wanted to offer a ‘full service’ where the wedding planner was local and knew everything there is to know about the area, venues, culture and the best wedding suppliers.

I set up my company at the end of the season and have never looked back.

What's the best part about being a wedding planner?
It’s working so closely with brides and grooms to create their perfect wedding day and then seeing all the happy smiling faces on the wedding day.

Which areas of Lapland do you enjoy organising weddings in, and why?
We specialise in weddings in Lapland, Finland and I love doing the weddings in Snow Chapels. It’s -5 inside the chapel so very cold, but I love the atmosphere and the genuine surprise on the guests faces when they see the snow chapel for the firt time.

What's the most unusual wedding you've organised?
It’s definitely the snow chapel wedding where the bride arrived by husky sleigh and the groom arrived by snowmobile. We timed it so they both arrived at the same time and saw each other in the distance, waving!

What's the most popular type of wedding you organise?
Snow chapels by far.

What advice would you give couples wanting to get married in Lapland?
Always use a local wedding planner and not a tour operator – they always know the area, the climate and can help you find ways to save money wherever you can.

My advice is to enjoy every moment and not to think about the practicality of getting married in a snow chapel where it’s -5 inside and sometimes -40 outside. Nothing about a wedding dress or shoes (or suit and shoes for the groom) are practical in snow, just enjoy the experience and just wait until you see the stunning photographs afterwards where you look absolutely amazing despite the cold!
