Northern Ireland Marriage Law Requirements

What are the legal requirements to get married in Northern Ireland?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
If 16 or 17 years old then parental consent is required.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Two witnesses are required


How long do I have to be resident in Northern Ireland before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in Northern Ireland.


Getting a marriage licence
You need to give notice to marry to the Registrar of Marriages where you wish to marry within 12 months of the ceremony, and a minimum of 28 days before the wedding date.
If you are having a religious ceremony you will then be presented with a marriage schedule by the Registrar, not more than 14 days before the ceremony. You must pick the schedule up personally yourself from the Registrar and give it to the person conducting your ceremony.
After the ceremony you must sign the schedule and then return it to the Registrar within three days.

What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Marriage Notice form.
Full birth certificates.
If you are divorced, you will have to show your final divorce papers and your former marriage certificate if you have kept your former married surname.
If you are widowed, you will have to show your former spouse's death certificate.
If you were not born in the UK you will need to provide a certified copy of your birth certificate, issued in your country.
All documents must be in English, with a certified translation provided if not.
If you are not an EU/Swiss citizen then you will need to complete an immigration status certificate.
