How to Get Married in Greece

Weddings in Greece are one of the most popular choices for a wedding abroad, particularly as each island or area of Greece has a different atmosphere, suitable for all tastes, from quiet, sleepy hamlets to modern towns and resorts.

It's relatively simple to marry in Greece, which must be why so many couples choose to marry here. Although it could be the great weather, lovely scenery and great choice of wedding locations too! Getting married on a Greek island is a classic wedding abroad option, from world-famous Santorini, to popular Zante, Crete the birthplace of Zeus, and picture-perfect Rhodes, there's bound to be an island for you.

Greece Marriage Law Requirements

What are the legal requirements to get married in Greece?

Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption
Two witnesses are required, who must bring their passports.


How long do I have to be resident in Greece before I can get married?

There are no residency requirements to get married in Greece.


How to get a marriage licence in Greece

You must take the papers mentioned below to the City Hall or the President of the Community in Greece. The licence takes up to seven days to issue and is valid for 6 months.
Once the marriage licence has been issued the bride and groom must both submit an application to marry to the Mayor or President of the Community where they wish to marry.


What legal papers do I need to take with me?

Full birth certificates with a certified translation.
Certificate of No Impediment”, which can be issued by your local Registry Office no longer than 3 months before the wedding date, and certified translation.
If you have been divorced then your first marriage certificate and the final divorce papers must be shown with a certified translation.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown with a certified translation.
If you are adopted then your adoption certificate must be shown with a certified translation.
If your name has been changed by deed poll then legal proof must be shown, stamped and dated by a solicitor (including if you are divorced and have reverted to your maiden name) with a certified translation.
