Austria is a beautiful country in which to exchange your vows. Make sure you have a wedding planner who can help you with the legalities, as they are straightforward, but not as simple as some countries. Don't forget to have your documents translated and stamped with an apostille to make them legal in Austria.

Austria Marriage Law Requirements

What are the legal requirements to get married in Austria?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related.


How long do I have to be resident in Austria before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in Austria, however it takes approx 2 to 4 weeks to sort out the paperwork.


Getting a marriage licence
You must bring the papers mentioned below in person to the Standesamt Office where you wish to marry.
Only a civil ceremony is recognised by Austrian law.
The ceremony will be conducted in German so you may need an interpreter.


What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Valid driver's licence
Full birth certificates
Proof of domicile (e.g. driving licence, tax bill)
Sworn affidavit stating that you are free to marry
If you have been divorced then the final divorce papers and your former marriage certificate must be shown.
Please note: if you were previously married outside of your home country or if you and your former spouse’s nationalities were different then you may need permission from the Austrian Ministry of Justice which will take time
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown
All documents must be certified with an apostille stamp and translated into German by an official translator.
