Tanzania Marriage Law Requirements

What are the legal requirements to get married in Tanzania?
Legal age for marriage without parental consent is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Two witnesses are required.

 

How long do I have to be resident in Tanzania before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in Tanzania.

 

Getting a marriage licence
Take the documents below to the Registrar of Marriages to obtain your marriage licence.
Your intent to marry must be posted for 21 days before you can exchange your vows, otherwise you can apply for a Special Marriage Licence from the Registrar of Marriages. The Special Licence must be notarised by a lawyer and returned to the Registrar to obtain the licence.
Once you have your licence you must arrange the date of your wedding with the District Commissioner’s office or the church where you will get married.

 

What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Passports, and notarised copies.
Full birth certificates, notarised.
Certificate of No Impediment, notarised.
If you have been divorced then the final divorce papers must be shown, and you must have been divorced for at least 6 months.
If you are widowed then your previous marriage certificate and the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown.
