Getting Married in Switzerland

What are the legal requirements to get married in Switzerland?
Legal age for marriage is 17 years for women and 18 years for men.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Only a civil ceremony is legal in Switzerland

How long do I have to be resident in Switzerland before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in Switzerland, but it may take up to 4 months to sort out the paperwork.

Obtaining a marriage licence
Choose the municipality in which you wish to get married and contact the town hall or registry office to obtain the papers you need to fill in, as they will vary according to the canton in which you marry. Send the papers back with the required documents below to obtain the marriage licence, which is valid for 6 months.

Full passports
Full birth certificate issued in the past 6 months
Certificate of no impediment
Certificate of single status
Proof of residency
If you have been divorced then your first marriage certificate and the final divorce papers must be shown.
Please note: a divorced woman cannot remarry within 300 days of her divorce, unless she has given birth to a child.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown.
All documents must be translated into either French, German or Italian (depending on the municipality in which you marry), and be stamped with an apostille stamp.
