What are the legal requirements to get married in Sri Lanka?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
How long do I have to be resident in Sri Lanka before I can get married?
You must be resident for four days before the wedding.
Getting a marriage licence
In Sri Lanka you must take the original documents mentioned below to a Civil
Status Officer in the area where you wish to marry.
You must provide your full names and addresses and those of your parents, as
well as your professions. Your wedding planner must have photocopies of all
documents three weeks before your date of travel.
What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Original birth certificate which shows the names of both parents.
Passports.
Full names, addresses, religions and occupations of both parents and
of the wedding couple.
An affidavit stating that both parties are single and free to marry.
If you have been divorced then the final divorce papers must be shown.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse
and your former marriage certificate must be shown.
If your name has been changed by deed poll then legal proof must be shown,
stamped and dated by a solicitor (including if you are divorced and have
reverted to your maiden name).
If adopted the adoption certificate must be shown.
