What are the legal requirements to get married in Japan?
Legal age for marriage without parental consent is 20 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related.
How long do I have to be resident in Japan before I can get married?
You must be a resident to submit a Registration of Marriage form at a Municipal Government Office. Marriage ceremonies are not legally binding in Japan, so once you have submitted your Registration of Marriage form then you are legally married.
Getting a marriage licence
You must bring the papers mentioned below to a Municipal Government Office in Japan.
Only a civil registration is recognised by Japanese law.
women can only marry 6 months after the end of any previous marriage.
What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Full birth certificates.
Sworn affidavit of Competency to Marry, notarised at your embassy, and translated into Japanese. This is valid for 3 months. 2 witnesses must sign it.
If you have been divorced then the final divorce papers must be shown.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown.
