What are the legal requirements to get married in Greece?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption
Two witnesses are required, who must bring their passports.
How long do I have to be resident in Greece before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in Greece.
Getting a marriage licence
You must take the papers mentioned below to the City Hall or the President of
the Community in Greece. The licence takes up to seven days to issue and is
valid for 6 months.
Once the marriage licence has been issued the bride and groom must both submit
an application to marry to the Mayor or President of the Community where they
wish to marry.
A notice of intent to marry must be published in a local newspaper or posted at
City Hall before the marriage licence application is requested.
What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Passports.
Full birth certificates with a certified translation.
Certificate of No Impediment”, which can be issued by your local Registry Office
no longer than 3 months before the wedding date, and certified translation.
If you have been divorced then your first marriage certificate and the final
divorce papers must be shown with a certified translation.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be
shown with a certified translation.
If you are adopted then your adoption certificate must be shown with a certified
translation.
If your name has been changed by deed poll then legal proof must be shown,
stamped and dated by a solicitor (including if you are divorced and have
reverted to your maiden name) with a certified translation.
