How to Marry in the Dominican Republic

Another very popular country to get married in, just make sure you leave enough time to sort out the legalities and get everything over to your wedding planner in resort. At least 6 months' notice is recommended. That keeps your stress levels down so you can enjoy your wedding!

Dominican Republic Marriage Law Requirements

What are the legal requirements to get married in the Dominican Republic?
Legal age for marriage is 18 years for both men and women.
Bride and Groom may not be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Two witnesses are required and must show their passports.
Divorced women cannot remarry until 10 months after their divorce.

 

How long do I have to be resident in the Dominican Republic before I can get married?
There are no residency requirements to get married in the Dominican Republic.

 

Getting a marriage licence
You must register for a marriage licence with the Oficialia del Estado Civil.
It is recommended that you apply at least 6 months in advance of the wedding.
Send photocopies of the documents below to apply, then show the originals on arrival.
Once you are married you will need to request a marriage certificate from the local Justice of the Peace.

 

What legal papers do I need to take with me?
Passports and birth certificates.
Tourist card.
Affidavit stating that you are single, legalised by the Dominican Republic Consulate.
If you have been divorced then the final divorce papers must be shown, and an affidavit declaring marital status and eligibility to marry.
If you are widowed then the death certificate of your previous spouse must be shown.
If your name has been changed then legal proof must be shown.
All documents must be legalised in your home country and translated into Spanish by an official translator at the Dominican consulate in your home country.
