Fairytale weddings don't get much better than a chateau wedding
surrounded by your loved ones (just ask Brangelina!). Just think, you could exchange your vows in a historical castle or chateau
and live out your romantic wedding ideas as you cross the moat or climb winding stairs to marry in the tower room!
You may imagine that a chateau wedding might restrict your choice of countries to choose from, but actually there's a much wider choice of countries where you can have a chateau wedding abroad than you may have thought. Turkey
may not be first to spring to mind, but there are some beautiful historic locations there in which to exchange your vows, of course the main European
countries which you'd expect to be able to marry in a castle are also very popular.
The traditional home of chateaux, France
, especially the Loire Valley
in western France, makes an incredible choice for your fairytale celebration. Classic French chateaux with turrets and moats still exist, although many are more manor house-esque these days. Many also have their own vineyards and hire the property out in its entirety, so, depending on your budget, you could book the whole chateau for your wedding, with your entire wedding party staying for the weekend and celebrate with local food and wine provided by the chateau's own grapes.
is another wedding destination with a plethora of “castello” where you can get married. Ancient castles have often been turned into beautiful hotels in Italy, and many offer weddings with all the benefits of a modern hotel but in an ancient setting. Often perched on a hill on the outskirts of a small town, these castles sometimes have a full restaurant and perhaps a spa or swimming pool as well. Again, you can hire out the whole castle for your wedding, and enjoy the view over the undulating Italian countryside as you relax and enjoy your wedding in this romantic country.
Germanic countries also provide some amazing wedding abroad choices. Austria
both have “schloss” - chateaux with impressive turrets and intricate architectural details often filled with tapestries and sumptuous furniture. These can be in a more isolated location than the ones in Italy, and are perfect if you have a large amount of guests coming to your wedding, or are focusing more on the wedding and celebration than sightseeing when you're in the country.
The Czech Republic
is another northern country where chateaux are prolific. Here, some are used as hotels and so have all the amenities you'd need for your celebration, while others are more historical monuments which are hired out specifically for weddings, mainly in the summer. Some of them also have a chapel as part of the property, so if you are looking for a religious ceremony then you could exchange vows in the chapel and then celebrate in the banqueting room.
One country you may not have thought of for a chateau wedding is Hungary
, but this incredible country actually does have a lovely selection of chateaux, manor houses and palaces available for weddings. You could go for a city setting in Budapest, get married in opulent surroundings and then celebrate in a local restaurant with delicious local food, or you could aim for a more countryside approach and marry in a historical house away from the city, surrounded by fields and with the sounds of summer floating in through the open windows.
Further south, Turkey
is an ancient land full of stunning historical houses and palaces which make awesome wedding locations. Intricate and colourful decoration, sometimes in silver or gold, cover the ceilings, walls and floors of many historical buildings here. Domed roofs create a sense of space and height inside, and large ballrooms give you plenty of room for dancing at your reception.
Outside Europe you can still have a chateaux wedding (or maybe a palace one!). India
is a country filled with royal palaces, many of which are hired out for large local weddings and are also available for weddings abroad. Palaces
here can be anything from a full service hotel to an ancient ruin, so it really depends on the type of ceremony you're looking for here. Many couples choose to marry at one of the boutique hotel/palaces (perhaps one which is floating in a lake, or in a nature reserve), as those give you the luxurious experience you may want for your wedding day combined with classic Indian hospitality and remarkable views.
As you can see, deciding on a chateaux wedding abroad can be more complicated than you may think! Whatever your country decision though, it's bound to be absolutely amazing.
